Thirty years ago the first Walkman hit the streets along with the first spam emails. And it was a time when two women could start a graphic design business by contributing $60 each. It's been a great investment.

It was a beautiful May Day in 1978. While sitting on Joy's porch, we decided to name our new firm "The Design Company " (in retrospect probably a wiser choice than either of our other ideas ... "GynaGraphics" and "Broad Strokes"). The rest, as they say, is history. The odds, of course, were against the success of a women-owned, small business. Now 30 years have passed; thousands of projects have been successfully completed; hundreds of satisfied clients, valued vendors, wonderful friends, and great employees (including 3 in-house nannies who helped raise 4 in-house toddlers) have all become part of our history. Some might say we were very lucky, but we know the secret. It clearly is because we were ... and still are ... having fun, doing good work, and making a profit.
